Emir Sanusi’s ‘perfect’ Law PhD thesis excites admirers

During the week, a video went viral on social media showing the moment the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, completed the requirements to be awarded a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. According to a picture of his thesis shared online, he received the degree from the School of Law.

In the video, the emir is seen in a meeting with some persons, believed to be examiners from the university. One of them noted that the emir’s thesis was practically perfect as it had no correction. He said, “I am in this very fortunate position to be the very first to congratulate Emir Sanusi on having passed the examination without any correction. The thesis stands and has been passed by the two external examiners as it was submitted. There is no further work to be done. So, congratulations to Dr Sanusi. I also want to congratulate your supervisor. There is going to be a huge celebration.”

The Emir’s PhD thesis was titled, ‘Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and a Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco.His reaction in the video reflected both happiness and surprise upon learning that his thesis had passed without any need for corrections.

Born in 1961, Sanusi attended St. Anne’s Primary School, a Catholic boarding school in Kaduna State, before moving on to King’s College in Lagos. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna. Additionally, he studied the Qur’an, law (fiqh), and philosophy as part of his Islamic Studies coursework at the International University of Africa, a private institution in Khartoum, Sudan.
