1 month ago 3

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has declared a 24-hour curfew in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis starting from midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

The announcement was made through a press release issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

The decision came after consultations with state security agencies, following a review of the activities of “unscrupulous individuals” who have taken advantage of the nationwide protests to perpetrate violence against innocent residents in the affected areas.

Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and commended the residents for their peaceful behavior during the nationwide protests.

The statement read, “The curfew is in the best interest of all citizens and everyone should comply fully to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

“The governor has directed security agencies in the state to ensure the total enforcement of the curfew across the Local Government Area.

“He warned those planning to unleash further terror on innocent citizens to desist immediately or face the full wrath of the law.

“The governor also called on the relevant security agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in their duties to prevent any potential disruptions to law and order. He also directed the security agencies in the state to ensure the total enforcement of the curfew across Jos/Bukuru Metropolis.

“Governor Mutfwang expressed gratitude to the citizens of Plateau State, particularly the clergy and imams, for their unwavering support of the government’s policies and programmes.

“He acknowledged their cooperation and adherence to directives during the planned nationwide protest and praised their commitment to maintaining peace and unity.

“The peaceful conduct of our people before, during, and after the nationwide protest is commendable. I urge everyone to continue to uphold this culture of peace as we work together to build a united and progressive Plateau.”

Despite the overall peaceful nature of the four-day protests, certain miscreants armed with weapons such as daggers and machetes vandalized shops and restaurants along Bauchi Road and Zololo Junction in Jos North Local Government Area, stealing food items and other valuables.

Security agencies intervened to prevent further escalation of these criminal acts.

Governor Mutfwang warned those considering further violence to cease immediately or face severe legal repercussions.

The state had four days of peaceful #EndBadGovernance protests before the recent incidents of looting and vandalism.
