1 month ago 51

A Channels Television reporter, Deborah Agbalam, was on Wednesday harassed by thugs while covering the #EndBadGovernance protest in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Naija News learnt that the thugs, stationed near the Federal Secretariat, aggressively intimidated and dispersed protesters.

According to witnesses, before Agbalam arrived, two protesters had already been assaulted, with police officers present but taking no action. The thugs threatened Agbalam, claiming their role was to prevent the protest from proceeding.

The Federal Secretariat, a central location for the week-long protest, has seen continuous gatherings of demonstrators demanding an end to hunger and poor governance.

The lack of intervention by over 20 police officers raises concerns about the protection of protest rights in Rivers State.

Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has expressed concern over the incidents and vowed a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable and prevent future issues.

Despite previous efforts to maintain order and support peaceful protests, including offering refreshments to protesters, the situation on Wednesday highlighted significant challenges.

The nationwide protest, now in its seventh day, has seen increasing violence in some Northern states.

‘No Going Back’ – Says Organizers Of #EndBadGovernance Protest

Meanwhile, the organizers of the #Endbadgovernance nationwide protest, aimed at addressing issues of hunger and hardship, have declared their intention to persist with the demonstration, notwithstanding the presence of security personnel intended to intimidate them.

Naija News reports that the federal government has made several appeals to the protesters to return to their homes, asking for more time to get things right in the country.

The protesters, however, have maintained their stands that their demands must be met before halting the ongoing demonstrations.

Despite security threats, Ene Obi, the former country director of Action Aid Nigeria, along with Hauwa Mustapha, both of whom are involved in the organization, affirmed their commitment to remain at the Moshood Abiola Stadium until the conclusion of the 10-day protest.
