In an unprecedented show of activism, children aged 8 to 13, along with youths, marched through the streets of Jalingo on Thursday afternoon to protest the ongoing hardships in the country.
Chanting “Bamu ai, bamu ai,” which means “We don’t agree, we don’t agree,” the children sought to highlight the difficulties they are facing.
The protest began on the well-known Hamaruwa Way and moved towards the flyover bridge, one of the city’s prominent landmarks.
The young protesters voiced their concerns loudly, calling for immediate measures to address their plight.
According to a Punch correspondent on the scene, the demonstration was closely monitored by officers from the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Meanwhile, a yet-to-be-identified man stripped himself naked in protest over hunger biting his family.
Naija News reports that the man took off his clothes and walked the street of Ojota, alongside other protesters, naked and singing ‘Solidarity forever’.
In a related development, a protester who identified himself simply as Benjamin Chijioke has revealed why he decided to join in the ongoing nationwide protest.
Chijioke, who is among many citizens who trooped out on the streets on Thursday to protest hardship and the high cost of living, said although he may not have a future again in Nigeria, he will not allow the future of his child to be wasted.
