Enugu Rangers’ head coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, has expressed his excitement at the prospect of serving as the assistant coach for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

As one of the local coaches under consideration for a role in the new backroom staff of the national team, Fidelis Ilechukwu sees this as a significant opportunity to elevate his coaching career.

Speaking to SCORENigeria, Ilechukwu said, “This will be an opportunity; it will take me to a higher level; it will be a great one for me. Whether I am there or not, I will support the team to do well in both AFCON qualifiers and the World Cup qualifiers.”

Amid these discussions, the NFF has yet to finalize the appointment of a substantive head coach for the Super Eagles as the team prepares to take on Benin Republic and Rwanda in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in September 2024.

With Fidelis Ilechukwu’s successful leadership that led Enugu Rangers to win the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title last season, Ilechukwu’s potential involvement in the Super Eagles’ coaching setup could be a great boost in the team’s quest to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and 2026 FIFA World Cup. Recall that he finished last season as the best coach in the NPFL.
