Enugu State Government said it has identified 2,640 ghost and deceased pensioners on the payroll, as it has commenced payment of pensions to local council retirees in the state.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chidiebere Onyia, said that the payment was in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s promise of clearing outstanding pensions and gratuities inherited from the previous administration.

He stated that over 7,000 local council pensioners had since received payments, following the governor’s approval of the recommendations of the Local Government Pensioners Biometric Verification Committee, which conducted the verification exercise.

He added that 7,109 local council pensioners received monthly payments close to half a billion naira in July, including 989 newly captured entrants who retired between April 2022 and April 2024 but were not accommodated in the pension scheme.

Onyia, who frowned on the level of fraud in the pensions system, said that the record provided by the Local Government Pensions Board indicated that the state had been paying over 8,760 local council retirees as of April 2024 against the 7,109 verified pensioners.

MEANWHILE, the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service has said that activating legally approved taxes is responsible for the over N35.9 billion realised in the first seven months of 2024.

Chairman of the Service, Emmanuel Nnamani, named some of the activated tax platforms as e-ticket sales, Pay-As-You-Earn collection, land use charges, withholding, capital gain, and consumption taxes, among others, adding that the government has blocked leakages in the tax administration.

He disclosed this in Enugu, during an interactive session with journalists as part of activities marking his first year in office, noting that the governor is prepared to boost the internally generated revenue of the state.

ALSO, the state government has commenced the assessment of 26,000 candidates that applied for 6,000 job slots in the state’s smart schools. The computer-based assessment of the candidates, which commenced four days ago, was held simultaneously at the Enugu State College of Education Technical and the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu.

The Guardian observed that many teachers could neither use the computer mouse nor log into the computer for the test. Although each candidate was allotted 45 minutes for the test, some spent the entire time without writing anything due to their inability to manipulate their system.
