Enzo Maresca Identifies Chelsea’s Biggest Problem After Disappointing Pre-season In USA

The manager of Chelsea, Enzo Maresca, believes the club’s biggest problem is in their defence after conceding 12 goals in five pre-season games in the United States.

Enzo Maresca and his boys had a disappointing run in the USA as they couldn’t make a positive statement ahead of the 2024-2025 season. They recorded three defeats, one draw, and just a win throughout their time in America.

Speaking after the team’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, Maresca emphasized that the club’s high defensive line has been a significant challenge.

He acknowledged that the team is actively working on dropping the defensive line by four or five meters to address this vulnerability, which has persisted since last season.

Recall that last season under coach Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea displayed remarkable attacking prowess, scoring 77 goals. However, their defensive frailties led to conceding 63 goals, culminating in a sixth-place finish.

In his overview of Chelsea’s performance in the last three weeks under his leadership, Enzo Maresca said he would work on giving the team a defensive advantage.

“It’s a habit. We are not working on defensive lines so high. It’s a habit from last year, or years ago; I don’t know”, Maresca said.

“We are trying to drop the defensive line a little bit, usually about four or five metres, just to have some advantage.

“Last year, we already conceded many goals with this problem. Hopefully, we can solve it very soon.”

Chelsea’s last friendly game before the commencement of the new season is against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
