Premier League club, Brighton have announced the signing of midfielder Matt O’Riley from Scottish champions Celtic for a reported fee that exceeds £25 million.

Matt O’Riley, 23, who was born in London and represents Denmark internationally, has penned a five-year contract with the club, which will keep him at the Premier League side until June 30, 2029.

During his time at Celtic, O’Riley made 124 appearances and found the back of the net 27 times, contributing to the team’s six trophy wins, including three Scottish Premiership titles.

This transfer fee (£25 million) sets a new Scottish record, surpassing the fees paid for players like Jota and Kieran Tierney in previous transfer windows.

Note that O’Riley’s move to Brighton marks a significant profit for Celtic, considering they signed him from MK Dons in 2022 for a reported £1.5 million.

Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, emphasized O’Riley’s versatility as a box-to-box midfielder, describing him as a special talent with a great character and strong ambition.

He said, “He is a great character and has a good ambition to succeed, and that’s very important for us.”

This signing adds to Brighton’s active summer transfer window, which also includes signing French forward Georginio Rutter from Leeds in a record £40 million deal and acquiring Netherlands midfielder Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord for approximately £25.5 million.
