EU Condemns Bangladesh For Excessive Force Against Protesters

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, on Tuesday criticized Bangladesh for the excessive use of force against protesters following days of violent clashes that reportedly resulted in at least 206 deaths, based on AFP reports.

Naija News learnt that the unrest began after student protests against civil service job quotas earlier this month, and the death toll, compiled from police and hospital records, includes several police officers.

Critics argue that the quota system is used to fill public service roles with supporters of the ruling Awami League party.

Borrell voiced his deep concern over the fatalities among officers, as well as the reports of “torture, mass arrests, and property damage” that have occurred.

He called for a thorough investigation and emphasized the need for those responsible to be held accountable.

There must be full accountability for the numerous instances of use of excessive and lethal force by the law enforcement authorities against protesters and others.

“We will follow closely the actions of the authorities in the context of this crisis and, with the fundamentals of EU-Bangladesh relations in mind, expect all human rights to be fully respected,” he said in a statement.

These clashes are among the most severe during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year administration.

Her government has since largely regained control through mass arrests, deploying troops, and implementing a nationwide internet shutdown, which was lifted on Sunday.
