In a move aimed at revitalizing one of Formula 1’s most glamorous yet processional races, F1 officials have introduced a new rule for the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix requiring two mandatory pit stops per driver—a first in the modern era of the race.
Traditionally known for its picturesque harbor views and high-profile spectators, the Monaco Grand Prix has long faced criticism for its lack of overtaking and on-track drama due to the circuit’s tight, narrow layout.
The new regulation is expected to strategically shake up race dynamics, creating more varied tire strategies and potential overtaking opportunities during pit stop windows.

F1 race director Niels Wittich explained, “This rule change is part of a broader effort to make every race—especially one as iconic as Monaco—more competitive and thrilling for fans around the world.”
Drivers and teams have responded with mixed feelings. While some welcome the strategic shakeup, others fear it could overcomplicate already tight races. Nevertheless, fan anticipation is high, with Monaco’s 2025 edition now poised to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.
