The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving road safety across the country.
Akume stated this at the award ceremony in honour of the Federal Road Safety Corps and its stakeholders in Abuja, on Thursday.
Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary General Services Office of the SFG, Dr Nnamdi Mbaeri, highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Works and the FRSC to ensure safer roads and reduce motor vehicle accidents.
Mbaeri noted that the Ministry of Works has been working to improve road infrastructure, including repairs and the installation of lighting on major highways to enhance nighttime driving safety.
In addition, he commended the FRSC for its efforts to curb reckless driving and promote compliance with traffic regulations.
“FG has done so much to ensure that the lives of citizens are protected through the reduction of road crashes on our roads. A lot of infrastructure has been put in place. The Ministry of Works has been working around the clock to make sure that they put all our roads in order.
“Also, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed and his team have also been working to make sure that unacceptable driving activities are reduced to the barest minimum,” he noted.
The Perm. Sec. emphasised the corps’ adoption of digital innovations to enhance road safety management.
This includes a digitised system for tracking road accidents and a real-time reporting portal designed to monitor and address traffic incidents promptly.
These advancements aim to reduce road crashes and ensure timely interventions during emergencies.
Mbaeri also assured that the FG remains committed to fully equipping the FRSC with modern tools and techniques for effective monitoring and safer road management.
The perm. sec. said, “The Corps Marshal and his team in the last few months, have tried to digitise the process of road accident tracking.
“Also, the corps has developed a portal to monitor online real-time accident cases out in the country; and then the government is still coming up with some other supportive measures to ensure that Nigerians drive safely.
He expressed confidence that with continued support, the FRSC would achieve even greater strides in ensuring the safety of Nigerian citizens.
The government is reportedly exploring additional measures to further improve road safety, emphasizing its dedication to safeguarding lives on the nation’s highways.
In his remarks, the FRSC Corps Marshal expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support of the agency.
Mohammed noted, “This gathering is an opportunity to thank Almighty God for sparing us through the year and to appreciate the president for his immense support.
“His commitment to funding our operations has allowed us to ensure safer roads and a free flow of traffic for Nigerians.”
The Corps Marshal also commended the dedication and loyalty of FRSC staff, acknowledging their selfless efforts throughout the year.
“Our staff have tirelessly worked to reduce road traffic crashes and provide a safe environment for motorists.”
