Flood: FEMD Alerts Abuja Residents Ahead Of Impending Heavy Rainfall

Residents of Abuja have received a strong alert ahead of an anticipated heavy downpour in certain areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that could result in flooding.

In a press release issued in Abuja on Monday, the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) said it has activated its Search and Rescue Team ahead of the expected event.

The statement signed and issued today by the department’s acting Director-General, Florence Wenegieme, mentioned that this decision was made in response to a forecast of significant rainfall by the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre, a division of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Abuja.

She noted that the FEWS Centre had forecast a high probability of intense rain from July 21 to July 25, potentially causing flooding in the Mabushi District and Kurudu region of the FCT.

Wenegieme requested the Facility Maintenance and Management Department to clear any obstructed manholes in the Mabushi District to ensure the unimpeded flow of water during heavy showers.

She also appealed to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board to remove any obstructions in drainages and to remove accumulated waste in the district to lessen the flooding’s effects.

Furthermore, the interim Director-General of the department asked the Satellite Towns Development Department to remove any blockages in the Kurudu area and to remove waste that has been disposed of haphazardly in the region.

“Residents should also heed to FEMD early warnings to ensure the safety of lives and property and always use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of a disaster,” she added.
