Yobe State government has distributed weighing scales (Modu) to Shariah Committees across the 17 local government areas in the state.

The Commissioner for Religious Affairs and Ethical Reorientation , Hon Yusuf Umar Potiskum disclosed this during the one-day sensitisation and distribution of weighing scales in Damaturu, Yobe State.

He said the scales are for marketers and traders of maise, guinea corn, beans, millet as well as other commodities across the various markets in the state.

Yusuf said the consequences of lack of conformity with the proper weight scale (Modu) is the manifestation of a lack of peace, unity, and love, as well as misfortunes, tragedies and disaster in our communities.

According to him, the importance of this sensitisation and programme cannot be overemphasized, considering the economic hardship and inflation the people are experiencing at the moment.

He assured that the government would not allow unfaithful marketers to continue their unGodly and unholy behaviour of shortchanging the people just to make profit.

The commissioner also informed the Hisba Commission that the Ministry of Religious Affairs is only responsible for policy formulation, programme supervision, advocacy, sensitisation and enlightenment on Religious and Sharia issues.

He added that ” The enforcement of shariah laws is solely the responsibility of Hisbah Commission to ensure full compliance with this weighing scale at our various markets.”
