Four people have lost their lives in a tragic boat accident in Lafia East Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Thursday.
The victims, including one man and three women, were part of a group of farmers travelling from Alogani village to the Ashangwa market when the boat they were on sank.
Eyewitness Abdul Hamid Sale, who was present at the scene, expressed grief over the loss, describing it as avoidable.
He explained that the farmers were forced to use the boat due to a lack of road networks connecting the local communities.
According to Sale, the boat was overloaded with 25 passengers, four motorcycles, and four bags of melon, which likely contributed to the accident.
“If we had good road networks here, no one would risk their lives on the boat, especially with so much cargo,” Sale said.
Haruna Muhammed, the overseer of the Lafia East Development Area, confirmed that authorities are aware of the incident and that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
He also revealed that experienced fishermen have been engaged to help recover the remaining bodies and property from the scene
