President Bola Tinubu began a historic three-day visit to France on Thursday, marking a Nigerian leader’s first official state visit in over 20 years.
The visit, aimed at bolstering economic partnerships between France and Nigeria, underscores Paris’s effort to renew its ties with Africa’s largest economy amid changing dynamics on the continent.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Tinubu at Paris’s iconic Invalides memorial complex. The event commenced with the national anthems of both countries echoing through the courtyard, setting the stage for discussions on deepening bilateral relations.
Describing the visit as an “opportunity to deepen the already dynamic relationship between France and Nigeria,” Macron’s office emphasized the potential for increased cooperation in various sectors.
Nigeria, Africa’s leading oil producer and home to the robust Nollywood film industry presents significant opportunities for France.
However, challenges such as insecurity, corruption, and widespread poverty — with over 129 million Nigerians living below the poverty line — continue to hinder progress.
For Nigeria, grappling with soaring inflation and food prices, the visit represents an opportunity to attract foreign investment and strengthen economic ties.
Tinubu’s office highlighted areas of interest, including “agriculture, security, education, health, youth engagement, innovation, and energy transition.” Both leaders will discuss shared priorities in finance, solid minerals, trade, and investment.
“This trip is pivotal for Nigeria as we seek to collaborate with France in addressing our economic and developmental challenges,” Tinubu’s office said in a statement.
Since his election in 2017, Macron has pursued a “renewal” in France-Africa relations, seeking stronger ties with English-speaking African countries like Nigeria.
The move comes as France’s influence wanes in parts of the continent due to military coups and shifting political dynamics.
Macron and Tinubu are expected to explore partnerships that could enhance Nigeria’s agricultural productivity, strengthen its security architecture, and promote innovation in energy and communication.
