The Nigerian Idol Season 9 was indeed a season of dreams. From the raw talent at the auditions to heart-wrenching goodbyes and the tear-jerking moment, Chima Udoye, after 12 weeks of competing with some of Nigeria’s best performers and vocalists, was crowned the winner. He polled more votes than the remaining top two contestants – Chioma and Lammy.
With an intense finale episode, the live show started with the top 10 contestants taking to the stage to perform John Legend’s Glory. It was immediately followed by the winners’ performances. Season 7 winner, Progress, performed alongside the Bigi Idol winner, while Season 8 winner, Victory Gbakara, performed an original he wrote before this season’s finale.
The night got intense with performances from guest performers such as Chike, Simi and then the top three finalists. Thereafter, the winner Chima was crowned. His wins include a cash prize of N30 million, a brand new SUV, music deal with a music video shoot, and DStv Explora with one year premium subscription.
Known for his onstage charisma and vocal dexterity that often left the judges – 9ice, Omawumi and Ric Hassani – speechless with every performance. During the finale performances, Omawumi pointed out that Chima was in a competition with himself – a true testament to his rise on the show and reflects how much he is capable of beyond the boundaries of the competition.
Specialising in jazz and soul music, Chima revealed at the beginning of the season that he hopes to showcase not only his vocal prowess but also use the Nigerian Idol platform to inspire others.
During her speech at the finale, Executive Head, Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice, Dr. Busola Tejumola, commended Chima for emerging winner, highlighting the resilience it took for him to get to the spot.
Speaking on his experience during a post-show interview, Chima said, “it was that of understanding and finding myself. I’m happy that you all have gone on this journey with me to realise it.
“I have figured out who Chima actually is. I have cried my eyes out and have no more tears left again. In all, I’m so grateful and I say thank you all so much for voting for me,” he added.
Chima added, “it’s not just about the money or the car but just having that title, ‘Nigerian Idol Winner’ attached to your name is it for me. It’s such a big deal to me; it’s like entering the ranks of Victory Gbakara, Progress, and Kingdom among other past winners. It’s indeed exciting for me.”
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the winner and the runners-up, Rite Foods’ Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Seleem Adegunwa, congratulated Chima on his achievement, and commended his perseverance and talent, emphasising that the victory is just the beginning of a successful musical career.
He also emphasised that Rite Foods’ sponsorship of Nigerian Idol reflects Bigi’s commitment to innovation, excellence, and empowering young Nigerians.
