Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has unveiled plans to transform Opobo Town with significant development projects, including the establishment of a higher institution and extensive land reclamation to accommodate crucial infrastructure.

Fubara made these commitments on Monday during the inauguration of the 7km Opobo Ring Road, complete with three bridges, in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.

The road is expected to enhance connectivity and foster socio-economic development in the region.
Speaking at the event, Fubara emphasised the importance of creating an enabling environment for growth and employment.

“We intend to bring a higher institution to this place. We will also do more reclamation because our major problem here is land,” he said.

“We will empower you so you won’t depend on me. Creating opportunities for gainful employment and empowerment is the only way Opobo will grow.”

The governor highlighted that while the project was initially flagged off on May 28, 2023, by the previous administration, his government redesigned and executed it to the celebrated standard.

“This project is personal to me. It is something my people can see and be proud of. I’m thrilled to be here inaugurating it,” Fubara remarked, expressing gratitude to the people of the local government for their steadfast support.

He urged the community to maintain its reputation for peace and unity, emphasising that such harmony is key to sustainable progress.

“Opobo/Nkoro is one of the most peaceful LGAs. While not entirely crime-free, the situation here is manageable due to our interrelationships and understanding. I appeal to you to continue maintaining this peace,” Fubara added.

The Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, who performed the inauguration, lauded Fubara as a visionary leader committed to impactful governance.

“This project reflects Governor Fubara’s dedication to infrastructure development and the socio-economic upliftment of Rivers State. Roads like this enhance connectivity, promote trade, attract investment, and improve residents’ quality of life,” Lawal stated.

He noted that such infrastructure not only boosts tourism and economic activities but also instils pride among the people of Opobo.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Barrister Elloka Tasie-Amadi, detailed the technical challenges overcome to complete the project, particularly due to the terrain.

“The road spans 7km, with a width of 7.3 metres, three bridges, and about 4km of drains. We had to fill sections up to 10 metres high with imported materials due to the soil conditions,” he explained.

Tasie-Amadi added that the road’s construction involved multiple layers, including sharp sand, sand-cement stabilisation, stone base, binder course, and a final wearing course, ensuring durability and safety.

The completion of the Opobo Ring Road marks a significant milestone in Governor Fubara’s infrastructure agenda, setting the stage for further transformative projects in Rivers State.
