Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has suspended the caretaker committee chairman of Akuku-Toru local government area of the state, Barrister Otonye Briggs, barely three weeks to the local government election in the state.

Fubara, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by his chief press secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, appointed Bitebobo Nelson Amieye to take over the affairs of the council.

He directed the suspended chairman to hand over all council properties in his possession to the new caretaker committee chairman.

The statement reads in part: “The chairman, Caretaker Committee of Akuku-Toru local government area, Hon Barrister Otonye Briggs, has been suspended with immediate effect.

“The governor has directed Hon Bitebobo Nelson Amieye, to immediately take over as chairman.

“Barrister Otonye Briggs is hereby directed to hand over all council property in his possession to the Caretaker Committee Chairman.”

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, in July, announced October 5, 2024 for the conduct of local government areas election in the state.

The RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, (rted), had made the disclosure during a stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt after the governor announced the termination of the tenure of the outgone local government chairmen last night.
