A chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has declared that Nigerians have suffered enough due to the frequent increases in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, since the current administration came into power.
Oguntoyinbo made this statement while reacting to Wednesday’s increase in the price of PMS by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
DAILY POST gathered that the NNPCL had announced another increase in the price of PMS across its stations in the country.
In his reaction, Oguntoyinbo appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently call the NNPC to order and immediately revert to the old price.
Oguntoyinbo noted that this action would help reduce the suffering of the masses.
The NNPP chieftain, in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Thursday, said the increase was announced at a time when Nigerians were still struggling to buy petrol at the previous pump price.
Oguntoyinbo further described the NNPCL’s action as insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.
He said this adjustment in the price by the NNPCL would further aggravate the suffering Nigerians are currently enduring.
“To their utter surprise, Nigerians received the shock of their lives when they discovered the adjustment in the price of petroleum products at various NNPC Ltd depots across the country.
“I urge the Federal Government, especially our President, who is also the Minister of Petroleum, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to instruct the NNPC to revert to the old price. As an economist, President Tinubu should be aware of the multiplier effects of continuous increases in the price of petrol.
“Nigerians are already suffering, and adding to their suffering at this time may not augur well for the country.
“Even before today, people have resorted to trekking long distances due to high transport fares. Prices of foodstuffs have risen beyond the reach of the average Nigerian. This new action by the NNPC will further add to people’s suffering.”
