The Federal Government has officially accredited eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic to award degrees to Nigerian students.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme on August 26, 2024.
According to Mamman, three universities in Togo and five in Benin Republic are recognized by the Nigerian government, while others are deemed illegal.
The move comes amid the government’s decision to cancel 22,700 certificates issued to Nigerians by unaccredited institutions in both countries.
Mamman stressed that the invalidation of these certificates was necessary to protect the country’s reputation, adding that many of the certificates were obtained through fraudulent means. He warned that Nigerians who acquired degrees from these illegal universities would face consequences, particularly those employed in government service.
