Garri, Tomatoes, Other Food Prices Rose By 55% Between May And June – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a significant increase in the prices of tomatoes, garri, and various food items, marking a 55% rise in June.

Naija News reports that the data released by the NBS indicates that these food items were observed to be sold at elevated prices in June compared to the previous month.

The list of food items that have seen a notable increase in price includes beans, garri, yam, tomato, and Irish potato.

The data bureau for Nigeria has noted a substantial year-on-year increase in the price of tomatoes, with a staggering 320.67% rise from ₦547.28 in June 2023 to N2,302.26 in June 2024.

Furthermore, the NBS has observed a 55.59% increase in the average price of tomatoes from ₦1,479.69 in May 2024.

The report further reveals that the average price of 1kg of brown beans, sold in its raw form, has increased to N2,292.76 in the month under review.

This suggests a significant price increase of 252.13% year-on-year from N651.12 recorded in June 2023 and a 14.11% increase in price on a month-on-month basis from N2,009.23 in May 2024.

Additionally, the NBS has observed a notable increase in the price of Irish potatoes, with a staggering 288.5% rise to ₦2,423.27 in June 2024, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s price of ₦623.75.

On a month-to-month basis, the NBS has reported a 51.92% increase in the price of Irish potatoes from ₦1,595.07 in the preceding month.

The NBS reports noted further that “The average price of 1kg Garri white sold loose went up by 181.66% on a year-on-year basis from N403.15 in June 2023 to N1,135.51 in June 2024, while there was an increase of 1.86% on a month-on-month basis.

“Also, the average price of 1kg of Yam tuber increased by 295.79% on a year-on-year basis from N510.77 in June 2023 to N2,021.55 in May 2024.

“On a month-on-month basis, it increased by 52.87% from N1,322.36 in May 2024 to N2,021.55 in June 2024.”

States Analysis

The NBS report further highlighted the analysis of state profiles in June 2024, revealing that the highest average price per kilogram of brown beans was observed in Kogi state, reaching N3,006.43. Conversely, the lowest average price was documented in Adamawa state, standing at N1,336.11 per kilogram.

The analysis also indicates that the highest average price per kilogram of tomatoes was observed in Abuja, reaching ₦3,992.61, whereas the lowest price was recorded in Kebbi State at N1,200.

Regarding the average price per kilogram of yam tuber, Lagos state was found to have recorded the highest price at ₦3,376.54, whereas Adamawa state recorded the lowest price at ₦1,100.

The bureau further noted that Gombe state had the highest average price per kilogram of white garri (garri) sold, standing at N1,619.27. Conversely, the lowest price was observed in Taraba state, at N900.

Additionally, an analysis by geographical zone indicates that the average price of brown beans (sold in loose form) was highest in the Northcentral zone at N2,923.45, followed by the South-south zone at N2,630.03. Conversely, the Northwest zone recorded the lowest average price at ₦1,647.03, the NBS stated.

The analysis also showed that the average price of tomatoes per kilogram was highest in the South-south and South-east zones, reaching N3,261.84 and ₦2,852.59, respectively. Conversely, the lowest average price was documented in the North-West zone at ₦1,411.16.

Furthermore, the South-west zone recorded the highest average price per kilogram of yam tuber at ₦2,745.80, followed by the North-Central zone at ₦2,440.35. Conversely, the lowest average price was recorded in the North-west zone at N1,238.49.

The southwest and northeast zones, according to the NBS, recorded the highest average price per kilogram of white garri (sold in loose form), standing at ₦1,199.62 and ₦1,155.63, respectively.
