The sole sponsor and organiser of the Gombe State Inter Schools Athletics and Principal’s Cup (football) competitions, Hon. Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, has reaffirmed his commitment to fostering youth talent through sports.

Speaking during an interaction with members of the main organising committee (MOC) and journalists shortly after the closing ceremony of a week-long sports fiesta at the Gombe Stadium Pantami, Gara expressed pride in the initiative, stating that it provides a vital platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and pursue excellence in various sports disciplines.

The event, which was the first of its kind in the Northeast region, featured over 70 schools from across 11 local government areas of Gombe State and aimed to promote healthy competition and teamwork among students.

Gara Gombe noted that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to engage youth in positive activities, steering them away from social vices and terrorism in the Northeast region, which has made it practically difficult for youths to excel in sports.

“I have created these platforms not just for competition, but to inspire our young people to harness their potential and become champions in their respective fields,” Gara stated.

He highlighted the importance of sports in building character, discipline, and leadership skills among the youth, which are essential qualities for the future leaders of the community.

Gara also announced plans to organise the Tertiary edition of the Gombe State High Institute Athletics and Football competitions. He urged schools to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Inter Schools Games, emphasising that he is committed to supporting talented athletes through scholarship programmes and professional training.

Parents and educators attended the event in large numbers, showing their support for the young athletes. Many expressed optimism that initiatives like the Gombe Inter Schools Games would not only enhance sportsmanship but also contribute to the overall development of the students.

“Education is not just about academic work alone; sports are included, and that is what school is meant to be. It is supposed to encompass the entirety of a person’s development, which is why His Excellency approved that we should have one week of school sports events.

“Education is not just confined to the classroom; it extends outside the classroom, and this aligns with the federal government’s policy for sports development,” Dr Aisha Umar Maigari, Commissioner of Education in Gombe State, said during the championships.

The Gombe Inter Schools Games, according to the sponsor, is set to become an annual event, with plans for expansion and increased participation in the coming years.

Gara’s vision for youth sports in Gombe reflects a growing recognition of the role athletics can play in education and community development. With continued support and investment, the state aims to cultivate a new generation of athletes ready to excel on both national and international stages.
