Govs’ control hindering LGs’ development, says Ogun PDP

The Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ogun State, Akinloye Bankole, has said the socio-economic growth and development at the local government levels have been impeded by what he described as the overbearing influences and unconstitutional control of LGs by state governors.

The PDP spokesman stated that the governors usually enthrone their cronies and foot soldiers during what he termed “a sham local government election” to have undue influence and control over the resources meant to develop the grassroots.

Bankole said, “The governors have realised the number of financial resources that are legitimately accruing to LG, by ways of monthly allocation and Internally Generated Revenues.

“Therefore, their lack of disposition to supporting constitutional autonomy for the LG is to ensure usurpation of the roles of the LG through control and undue influences.

“What the governors have continued to do is to trample on the country’s constitution, the purposes of LG as the third tier of our government is ultimately defeated and cannot cater to the needs and good of the people at the grassroots.

“Governors’ overbearing influences and unconstitutional control of LG have hindered expected socio-economic growth and development at the grassroots level. This is major because no LG has unfiltered access to its revenues.”

Bankole added, “To ensure good and productive governance at the grassroots, the first major task is to liberate the LG from the claws and shackles of the governors.”
