Lagos State government has tasked all relevant departments and agencies involved in child care to step up efforts in providing holistic care and support.
Speaking at a one-day stakeholders meeting by the state’s Ministry of Youth and Social Development for stakeholders at the Correctional Centre for Junior Boys, Yaba; the Permanent Secretary, Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, stressed that the well-being of children in the state is a reflection of the state’s health.
Regretting that many children are facing abuse, neglect, trafficking, and forced labour, which threaten their safety and development, she said recent reports indicate a troubling rise in these incidents, underscoring the need for immediate and concerted action. She lamented that pressures of modern life, among other factors, have led to a significant increase in mental health issues among children.
“We must prioritise mental health services and provide accessible support systems for our children. While technology and social media offer opportunities for learning and connection, they also pose risks of cyber bullying, exposure to inappropriate content and addiction.
“It is our duty to educate children and parents on the responsible use of technology and implement protective measures,” she said. Director, Child Development, Bukayo Odukoya, stressed that the goal of all agencies and departments should be to improve the lives and futures of the most vulnerable members of the society.
