The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development has launched a five-year Strategic Action Plan to improve wastewater management.

The initiative, scheduled for 2025 to 2030, aims to ensure sustainable wastewater management throughout Lagos, safeguard public health, enhance environmental sustainability, and improve the quality of life for all residents.

A Wednesday statement noted that the unveiling was done at a two-day Safely Managed Sanitation Conference held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.

The General Manager of LSWMO, Adefemi Afolabi, emphasised the plan’s vital role in promoting sustainable urban development.

“This plan is a clear demonstration of our commitment to improving sanitation in Lagos. By working closely with USAID and other partners, we will create an environment that prioritises public health, environmental protection, and economic growth,” Afolabi said.

He explained that the new strategy aligned with the recently introduced Lagos WASH Policy 2024, noting that the plan intended to enhance the efficiency of existing wastewater management systems, and improve sanitation services, particularly in underserved areas.

“The LSWMO will explore innovative revenue mechanisms to create a financially sustainable model for wastewater management in Lagos. Upgraded infrastructure will be deployed to mitigate the environmental impact of wastewater discharge, contributing to a cleaner, safer ecosystem,” Afolabi added.

He also noted that the Lagos State government was actively seeking investment partnerships to enhance infrastructure and develop long-term solutions to the city’s wastewater challenges.

The GM stressed the importance of private-sector partnerships, stating that they were essential for driving investment in wastewater solutions and were critical for Lagos’ growth and public health improvement.
