A 78-year-old grandfather, Akanbi Adedoyin, was reportedly killed by his grandson, Kusibe, after being struck on the head with a plank during a disagreement in Ilare-Ijesa, Osun State.

Kusibe allegedly hit his grandfather on the head with a plank, inflicting open wounds. Residents who heard the old man’s cries rushed to the scene and rescued him.

Speaking to our correspondent on Saturday, a resident of Ilare-Ijesa, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, said they took the injured grandfather to a local government health facility, where he received first aid.

“We were told to move him to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa for further treatment due to the severity of the wounds, but we couldn’t afford it. He eventually died two days later. I arrived at the scene early, but no one else was present with the grandfather and Kusibe when the incident occurred. We heard the noise and rushed to help.

“The old man said Kusibe hit him on the head. He lost so much blood. We were advised to go to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa, but we couldn’t. The man eventually died. The incident happened on Monday. The grandfather died on Wednesday.”

Another resident of Ilare, who identified himself as Oludele, said those who rushed to the scene immediately after the incident arrested Kusibe and handed him over to operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at their Ilare Ijesa office. He was then transferred to the Esa Oke Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Owalare of Ilare, Oba Adejoro Otebolaku, commenting on the incident through a statement obtained by our correspondent on Saturday, urged the police to ensure justice is served to serve as a deterrent.

The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, told our correspondent in a phone conversation on Saturday that an investigation by the police revealed that Kusibe attacked his 78-year-old grandfather over a disagreement about farm ownership.

She said, “It is true. Kusibe allegedly hit his grandfather, aged 78, on the head after an argument about the ownership of a farmland. He was arrested and taken to court. The court has remanded him in a custodial centre.
The incident happened on Monday, but the grandfather died on Wednesday.”
