Group mourns naval officer who died rescuing 59 from drowning

The Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other Security Agencies has expressed sorrow over the death of an officer of the Nigerian Navy, Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza

Gwaza died while leading a rescue mission to save 59 individuals aboard the MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel in distress at Okpobo field, near the Okpobo River, Rivers State.

PUNCH Online reported that the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, in a statement on Friday, said the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force.

PSNASA Convener, Mary Fatile, on Tuesday noted that his selfless actions in the face of peril underscored the bravery and dedication of naval personnel and other security agents who protect the nation daily, often at the risk of their lives.

PUNCH Online reports that the organisation provides moral, emotional, and possibly material support to the Nigerian military and other security agencies.

The group aims to rally the public to recognise and appreciate the sacrifices made by security personnel, especially those who risk their lives in the line of duty to ensure the safety and security of the nation.

This was disclosed in the statement titled, “PSNASA mourns loss of Lt. Commander Gwaza: A hero who gave his life to save others.”

It read, “Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other Security Agencies commiserates with the Nigerian Navy over the loss of one of its gallant officers, Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza,who paid the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing a vessel in distress, recently.

“He selflessly risked his life to save 59 people on board MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel that was in danger of sinking at Okpobo field. Despite the treacherous conditions, he courageously led the rescue operation, ensuring the safety of all on board.

“Tragically, he lost his life in the process, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and selflessness.”

The group sees the late Gwaza’s sacrifice as a symbol of the dedication of security personnel who risk their lives daily. The organization urges Nigerians to support and honor these selfless heroes.

“PSNASA sees Gwaza’s sacrifice as a testament to the unwavering dedication and commitment of naval personnel, as well as other security agents, including military personnel, police officers, and emergency responders, who risk their lives every day to protect us from harm.Unfortunately, some of these brave individuals make the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the line of duty.

“PSNASA therefore calls on Nigerians to come together as a society to support and appreciate the sacrifices of these heroes. It is our responsibility to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices of these heroes, who selflessly put the needs of others before their own.

“Let’s show our security agents that we value their service and sacrifices. Let’s stand together to support them and their families. We owe it to them to ensure that their bravery and selflessness are recognized and appreciated. Together, we can make a difference and show our security agents that we care.”
