Group Warns On Proposed Amendment To Sokoto Emirate Law

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in  the on-going move by the Sokoto State  governor and  the House of Assembly to amend provisions in the Sokoto Emirate Council laws.

The group said the motive behind the amendments is to whittle down the powers of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar in exercising his rights and  desecrate the sultanate council.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the group maintained that the sultan has the right to appoint district heads, village heads and all traditional title holders in Sokoto State.

It added, “Any attempt to amend the law and  subject such rights to the approval of Sokoto State government is to politicise the Sokoto Emirate Council appointments which would surely destroy the enviable and valuable tradition of the people of Sokoto State.”

It said the on-going Sokoto Emirate Council Law amendment by the House of Assembly could escalate the insecurity problems in the country.

“This is why MMWG is calling on President Bola Tinubu to stop Governor Ahmed Aliyu from proceeding on the amendment process and withdrawal totally the amendment bill,” the group said.
