Unidentified gunmen suspected to be herdsmen reportedly attacked and kidnapped commuters along the Oweto-Apa-Adoka-Otukpo road in Benue State. The gunmen attacked on Friday evening at a place between Asaba and Olojo.
Some truck drivers and other commuters from both Otukpo to Oweto and from Oweto to Otukpo were reportedly kidnapped, while others were killed.
According to an eyewitness, a commercial motorcyclist, commonly known as an Okada rider, who was heading to Agatu with a casket on his motorcycle, was killed, leaving his bike and casket on the road with other abandoned trucks.
A former chairman of Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, John Ikwulono, confirmed the attack to DAILY POST, saying that the number of casualties is yet to be ascertained.
“Aside from the guy who was killed by the roadside, we don’t know how many casualties at the moment. Gunshots were sporadic; I believe that was done to get down those who may be trying to escape,” he said.
At the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the Benue State Police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, proved abortive as she did not pick up the calls put through to her.
