Hamas Calls For Ceasefire In Gaza, Palestinian Independence After Trump’s Election Victory

A senior official from Hamas has called for an end to hostilities in Gaza and a renewed push for Palestinian statehood in light of Donald Trump’s election as the President of the United States.

Speaking to Newsweek, Hamas Political Bureau spokesperson Basem Naim expressed hope that the new U.S. administration would support Palestinian aspirations for independence.

Naim stated, “The election of Trump as the 47th president of the USA is a private matter for the Americans.

“But Palestinians look forward to an immediate cessation of the aggression against our people, especially in Gaza, and look for assistance in achieving their legitimate rights of freedom, independence, and the establishment of their independent self-sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

He urged the U.S. to reconsider its support for Israel, saying, “The blind support for the Zionist entity ‘Israel’ and its fascist government, at the expense of the future of our people and the security and stability of the region, must stop immediately.”

Naija News reports that the Republican candidate and former U.S. President, Donald Trump, was declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election, defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who had hoped to make history as the first female president.

During his previous term, Trump maintained a close alliance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently engaged in conflicts with groups aligned with Iran, a situation that escalated after a large-scale Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023.
