Barcelona’s manager, Hansi Flick, has expressed his desire for the club to work on their defensive strategy in preparation for the 2024-2025 season.

Hansi Flick highlighted that the team had been relying too heavily on defending from the back, indicating the need for improvement in this aspect.

Flick’s comments came after Barcelona’s pre-season friendly match against Manchester City in Orlando, Florida, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Pau Víctor opened the scoring for Barcelona, only for Nico O’Reilly of Manchester City to level the match. Pablo Torre then put Barcelona in the lead before Jack Grealish equalized for Manchester City.

Afterwards, the friendly game was decided via penalties as FC Barcelona came out victorious with a 4-1 scoreline.

Reflecting on the match, Flick praised his team’s performance, stating, “I am very happy with my players. We defended like a team and we also attacked like a team. But we defended too much from the back. It’s not what I like the most. We have to improve on that.”

Barcelona’s next game in their United States tour will be against Real Madrid on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, revealed that the club would not be making further additions to their squad this summer, after the signings of Kylian Mbappé and Endrick. He confirmed that the squad is complete, emphasizing the return of Jesús Vallejo and the recovery of David Alaba from injury.

Ancelotti also expressed confidence in the capabilities of young centre-backs like Joan, Jacobo, and Raul Asencio, stating that they possess the necessary qualities to contribute to the team.

He said: “The squad is closed. [Jesús] Vallejo is back, [David] Alaba is recovering.

“We have young centre-backs like Joan, Jacobo and Raul [Asencio] who are training and have a lot of quality. I believe we are well covered in this position.”
