How Milan coach inspired Chukwueze’s form

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze has revealed the discussion he had with new AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca, which spurred his improved performances for the club during their pre-season campaign.

Chukwueze has been in superb form ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, scoring one goal plus two assists in four games.

In a recent interview, Chukwueze revealed that Fonseca has played a big role in his revival, as the Portuguese tactician has been in constant communication with him.

“He only told me one thing: ‘Samuel, I don’t want to see the Chukwueze from last year. I want the one from Villarreal.’ And I said, ‘Okay, no problem.’ It’s like I’ve been reborn; I’m a new player,” Chukwueze told La Gazzetta, per Milan Post.

After their 3-2 win against Manchester City, when he made two assists, he hailed Fonseca, who took over from Stefano Pioli, for believing in him.

“I love the new coach; he gave me a chance right away, and it’s important when someone gives you confidence. I tell the fans that they will see a new Samu this year,” Chukwueze said via Milan Matters.

Chukwueze joined AC Milan from Villarreal last summer for a fee in the region of €20m.

For most of his debut season in Milan, the 25-year-old winger was unable to replicate his form in Spain for the Serie A giants.

Amid his struggles to hit his stride, he also had limited game time under the tutelage of coach Stefano Pioli.

Last season, the former Villarreal player scored three goals plus three assists across 33 appearances in all competitions in his debut season with the former Italian champions.

Milan begin their Serie A campaign with a fifteen against Torino on August 17, and Chukwueze will be looking to have an improved performance for the Rossoneri.
