The Ogun State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, David Ojelabi, has highlighted the significance of sports development, describing it as a crucial platform to curb social vices among youths.

Ojelabi pointed out that involvement in sports can deter young people from engaging in crime by offering them opportunities to channel their energy into activities that provide financial rewards and recognition.

The Commandant, represented by the Deputy Commandant and Head of Critical National Asset and Infrastructure, Aderinola Adefela, made this statement while declaring open the state command’s Sports Week on Wednesday.

He urged private corporations, institutions, and well-meaning individuals to support sports development, noting that it is a valuable means of empowering the country’s youth.

Ojelabi also encouraged the NSCDC football team to increase their efforts and commended the corps’ management for its contributions to the development of football and athletics in the country.

The Commandant stated, “We all know that sports is now a money-spinning venture; it is a great source of empowerment for our youth, helping them channel their energy into productive pursuits.

“It is with this in mind that I call on every agency, institution, private corporation, and well-meaning personality in society to get involved and finance sports development in the country.

“We should support efforts to identify young talents and nurture them into professionals and stars who will make themselves and the nation proud.”

The Commandant added that, aside from the financial rewards associated with sports, its role in maintaining physical fitness and promoting a healthy lifestyle cannot be overstated. He urged officers to embrace regular exercise due to its numerous benefits.

Speaking on the purpose of the sporting event, the Officer in Charge of Sports at the Ogun State NSCDC Command, Sunday Jesutofunmi, said that the annual programme fosters synergy among the officers in the command and strengthens relationships.

Jesutofunmi noted that in addition to helping officers stay fit to perform their duties of securing lives and properties—especially critical infrastructure and national assets—the event also serves to discover talents, such as Olufunmilayo Gabriel and Idowu Obasanjo, who are both award-winning squash and badminton champions.

The sporting event featured football, table tennis, and draughts, among other activities, and included the presentation of awards to the Managing Director of Vision Sports Outlook, Mr. Olude, and Oba Adeniyi Emulu, the Olu of Orile Itesi, for their support of sports development.
