Hugo Lloris Blasts Argentina For Racially Abusing French Footballers Of African Roots

Former France captain Hugo Lloris has insisted that no reason should have prompted the Argentina national team to racially abuse his country.

Hugo Lloris was in goal when Argentina beat France to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Afterwards, he retired from international football and then moved to the United States where he is currently playing for Major League Soccer Club, Los Angeles FC since December 2023.

While France were battling to win the Euro 2024 in Germany, Argentina were in the United States trying to defend their Copa America title. The French team failed in Germany as they crashed out in the semi-finals, while Argentina successfully defended the Copa America title in the USA.

Following their Copa America triumph, Chelsea midfielder, Enzo Fernandez did an Instagram Live showing Argentine players singing racist chants against France, saying most players of the French team are Africans.

The video sparked backlash against Fernandez and Argentina, forcing the midfielder to apologize, as he described the incident as a “moment of euphoria”.

In his reaction to the incident, Hugo Lloris, who is France’s most-capped player of all time, told reporters in the US that such an incident shouldn’t be allowed in the world of football.

Lloris said: “It doesn’t matter if you are in a moment of euphoria because you have won an important trophy. It demands even more responsibility when you are a winner.

“You don’t want to hear or see this kind of thing in football. We all stand against discrimination and racism.

“I just think and hope it is a mistake. We all make mistakes sometimes and hopefully, they will learn from it.”

The former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper added: “They [Argentina] are the face of football right now, in South America, in the world. They deserve a lot of credit for what they have done on the field for the last four or five years.

“But when you win, you are an example for others, especially kids.

“It was a proper attack on the French people, especially for the French people who have some African origin and family.”
