Babajide Adebanjo shocked many when he became the Guinness World Record holder for the longest twerking time after continuously twerking for three hours and 30 minutes. He tells OGHENOVO EGODO-MICHAEL about the experience and other issues

You recently went viral as the current world record holder for the longest twerking time. What inspired you to embark on this journey?

I have always been fascinated by the art of dance, the freedom to express myself through my body, whichever way I like, and I love to do that by twerking. So, I thought, why settle for less when I can do more?

I wanted to push myself to new limits and explore the possibilities of this dynamic movement. When I discovered that there was a category in the Guinness World Record for the longest twerking time, I knew I had to go for it. It was a chance to challenge myself, showcase my dancing skills and be a form of inspiration for others to embrace their interests, no matter how weird it might seem.

When did you start twerking, and what motivated you to pursue it?

That was in 2014, when I was still in the university. It started from casually dancing to discovering that shaking my butt was easier for me to do than break dancing, but I never had the confidence to dance in public, because of negative reactions. However, as someone who has always loved music and dance, I felt drawn to the infectious rhythm and self-expression that twerking allows. I started practising in private, and as I became more comfortable, I began sharing videos online. The positive feedback and encouragement I got from others motivated me to keep pushing myself and exploring the different ways of twerking. It has since become a passion, and a way for me to connect with others who share my enthusiasm.

Many people have criticised your choice to contest the twerking category. What do you have to say to such people?

To those who criticise my choice, I would say that I am not hurting anyone. I am simply doing what I love. All I can hope for is that my achievement can inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and go after their goals, no matter how unconventional or crazy they might seem.

Beyond content creation, are there other areas of entertainment that you would like to explore?

Yes, I am eager to explore other areas of entertainment beyond content creation. I am passionate about music and would love to collaborate with artistes, and even release my own tracks. I am also interested in acting and would be thrilled to get roles in films or TV shows. Additionally, I have considered hosting events or workshops to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for dance. Ultimately, I want to be an entertainer.

There is a belief among some that men who twerk are feminine. What are your thoughts on this stereotype?

I think that stereotype is outdated. Twerking is a form of self-expression in dance that should not be restricted to gender or a group of people. Men, women, and non-binary individuals can all excel at twerking. It is about confidence, creativity, having fun, and not giving in to traditional gender norms. I am confident that my achievement can help break down barriers and inspire others to try new things, even if it is a record weightlifting for women, or hiking and embracing their inner desires regardless of gender or societal expectations.

You recently posted a video of yourself twerking on the road. Are you not concerned about potential harassment or negative reactions?

Yes, I had some concerns about potential harassment or negative reactions when I posted the video. As a public figure, I am aware that not everyone will agree with or appreciate my content. However, I believe that sharing my passion and creativity is important, and I try not to let fear of judgment hold me back. I am fortunate to have a supportive community and fans who encourage me to keep doing what I love, and of course, I always take necessary precautions to ensure my safety, especially when filming in public spaces.

Who are some of the twerkers or influencers whose videos you enjoy watching the most?

You will agree with me that practically everywhere one turns to on the Internet, one will see videos of people twerking, so gradually, this dance has been embedded in society. However, there are different variants in twerk dancing and the record I broke is one amongst the wide spectrum of twerk dances, even though they are under the same umbrella. Some of the notable names I watch include Bobby, Anastasiia, Solangejay, and Janemena. Sometimes, I watch Jamaican carnival videos, because they have so much fun doing the dance over there.

Some have suggested that your efforts are merely for clout chasing. Is that so?

I can assure you that my efforts are not solely to chase clout or seek fame. While it is natural to want recognition for one’s passions and hard work, my driving forces are mainly creativity, connection, personal growth and inspiration for others.

Also, having an audience and receiving appreciation can be fulfilling, but it is not the main motivator for me. I would continue creating and pursuing my interests, even if no one is watching. That being said, I acknowledge the importance of online presence and community engagement in today’s digital age. I believe in being genuine, engaging, and responsible with my online presence and I would use it as a tool to amplify my passions and connect with others who share similar interests.

What are some common misconceptions about people who twerk?

People think twerking is just for clubs and parties, but it is not.  It can be performed in social settings, or done as a solo activity for exercise and self-expression. Some even say it is not a real dance style, but it is. Twerking has a rich history and cultural significance, and it requires skill, practice, and dedication to master. Some even think twerking is only for people with certain musical tastes but that’s not true. Twerking can be performed to various genres of music, and its versatility is part of its appeal.

It can be a powerful way to connect with one’s body, release stress, and boost confidence. It is even a form of exercise, and by recognising and challenging these misconceptions, I believe we can work to create a more inclusive and respectful environment for people who enjoy twerking and other forms of self-expression.

How would you describe your personality?

I am an outgoing and empathetic person who enjoys building strong relationships with others. I tend to stay calm at times, especially when under pressure. I approach tasks with a creative and organised mindset. Usually, I am motivated by challenges, and I value honesty and integrity in my interactions.

How does your family feel about you twerking?

Initially, they were skeptical about my choice of dance, but with consistency and a lot of laughter, my family accepted my twerking journey and supported me all through; from the beginning of attempting to break the Guinness World Record to receiving the certificate. They see the hard work and dedication I put into my craft, and appreciate it.

What is your educational background?

I had my secondary school education at Oba Adelani Gbogboade Memorial College in Surulere, Lagos. I then went on to study Agricultural Engineering at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Osun State. Even as a certified engineer, I still create time to pursue my passion and express myself however I deem fit.
