Iconic juju musician, Ebenezer Obey, is currently mourning the death of his longtime band member, Sabitiu Fasasi, aka Vasco Dagama, who passed on recently.

Speaking on the special bond he shared with the deceased, who was a pioneer member of his band, Obey told Sunday Scoop, “I referred to him as my elder brother, and he was a very special person to me. He was eight years older than me, and we are both from Idogo in Ogun State. He was actually my senior at Methodist Primary School, Idogo.

“Till the time of his death, I was constantly talking to the doctor who was treating him. I was even at his bedside some days before his death.”

On how they maintained a cordial relationship over the years despite the age difference between them, Obey said, “Like I said, he was like an elder brother to me, and we both loved each other. Although people tried to come between us at different times by spreading different rumours, we both maintained our relationship. We were very close, and till he died, we spoke every week.”

Asked about the arrangements for Dagama’s final rites, Obey said, “The family has decided that his burial will take place on September 15, 2024. He is survived by his wives and children, and we’re going to make sure we give him a befitting burial. I will also do whatever I need to do to make sure that his memory is kept alive.”
