I Will Continue To Fight For Karu Market Traders – Senator Ireti Kingibe

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator, Ireti Kingibe, has said she would continue to fight for Karu market traders until the federal government comes to their aid.

Senator Ireti Kingibe said the fire incident at Karu market caused the traders to lose their sources of livelihood. She said the federal government owes the traders assistance.

Senator Ireti of the Labour Party, said this on Tuesday, on her X handle.

Her pledge followed events of last week’s plenary in which she moved a motion in the Red Chamber for the federal government to repair the Karu Market, consumed by fire for the traders.

In her motion, she said if the government erects the Karu market, it will give the opportunity for original shop owners to occupy their shops. She added that it would prevent rich ones from taking over the shops of the struggling traders.

Her motion was, however, disputed by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. Akpabio said the prayer was wrong. He argued that the government cannot use its money to build markets.

The Senate President, however, called for secondment of the motion, which Senator Natasha Akpoti seconded.

In the statement, on Tuesday, Senator Ireti said: “I am committed to relentlessly advocating for the welfare of the people of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly the Karu market owners who have suffered devastating losses in the recent fire outbreak. I will continue to push for and work tirelessly to ensure that they receive the necessary support from the government to rebuild their livelihoods.

“I would like to express my gratitude to my colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti, for seconding this motion. Her support is an evidence to our shared commitment to the well-being of our constituents.

“As the Senator representing the good people of FCT, I am dedicated to ensuring that the affected market owners receive the necessary assistance to get back on their feet. This includes providing relief materials, financial support, and facilitating the reconstruction of the damaged market stalls.”

She urged “the government to take immediate action to address the plight of the Karu market owners and provide the necessary support to help them recover from this disaster. We must work together to ensure that they are not left behind and that their livelihoods are protected.

“I will continue to push for the welfare of my constituents and ensure that their voices are heard. I am committed to making a positive impact in the lives of the people of FCT and will stop at nothing to ensure that they receive the support they deserve.”
