Ideye optimistic ahead Zamalek Confed Cup clash

Enyimba striker Brown Ideye remains optimistic that the club can capitalise on Zamalek’s qualification into the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup and join them in the last eight as well by beating them at home on Sunday.

Enyimba face the huge task of avoiding elimination in the tournament, needing a win in their last group game to stand a chance of qualifying for the next round, but their destiny is not totally in their hands.

While they hope to do their job against the defending champions, they will also rely on the Black Bulls of Mozambique to beat another Egyptian side, Al Masry.

Zamalek have an unassailable lead at the top of the table with 11 points, followed by Al Masry on six points and Enyimba on five while Black Bulls have four points.

Ideye believes the Egyptian champions might opt to rest key players, giving the Nigerian side an advantage to exploit.

“It’s a must-win match for us. Zamalek is a strong team, but we are determined to secure the maximum points. They’ve already qualified for the next round and might rest some key players,” Ideye said.

Enyimba’s run in the competition has been short of inspiration, failing to win any of their first three games.

They bounced back with a 4-1 win over Black Bulls in Uyo on match-day four but faltered again last Sunday after a disappointing draw against Al Masry in Uyo.

Ideye, a member of Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON triumph joined the two-time CAF Champions League winners until the end of the season, 17 years after he featured for 17 years after he left Ocean Boys in 2006.
