The leading socio-cultural recreation club in Nigeria, Ikoyi Club 1938, has announced plans to host a memorable 86th anniversary which began on Wednesday, September 25.

Ikoyi Club 1938 officially came into being on September 29, 1938, through the merger of the European Club and Lagos Golf Club. Its reaction sections include tennis, swimming, squash, table tennis, badminton and others.

The weeklong anniversary tagged ‘Ikoyi Club: Repositioning for the Modern Age’ kicked off with a symposium with the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamza, as the key speaker.

Vice chairman of the club who doubles as the chairman of the anniversary planning committee, Rufai Ladipo, explained that the Deputy Governor’s insights into leadership and governance will undoubtedly resonate with the club’s theme of repositioning as well as provide invaluable perspectives as it chart the course for the future of the club.

“This year, as we commemorate yet another milestone in the rich history of Ikoyi Club 1938, we reflect on our journey with immense pride and anticipation for the future.

“Over the decades, our club has not only remained a beacon of excellence but has also adapted and thrived in the ever-evolving landscape of social and recreational life in Nigeria.

“Our commitment to excellence remains unwavering and we’re confident that the steps we take today will prepare the club for the next level of growth, admiration and overall satisfaction of our growing membership,” he added.

Chairman of the club, Tafa Zibiri- Aliu noted that they are proud to have continued the legacy of the club which keeps attracting more members with over 3000 people still trying to join the club.

He described the club as the only socio-cultural club in Africa with eight sections noting that they will not compromise on standards just as he promised they will continue to upgrade facilities in the club which are world class.

The anniversary celebration will also feature an award night for staff on Thursday (today), a children’s party on Saturday and a gala night on Sunday.
