Immigration Suspends Officer Over Involvement In Drug Trafficking

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended one of its personnel at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport MMIA, Lagos, Akomolafe Gbenga Michael, over multiple charges of alleged drug trafficking.

Naija News reports that the Spokesman of the Service, DCI Kenneth Udo, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

Udo said the officer is currently being arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

He added that the NIS is committed to service delivery, discipline, and zero tolerance for criminality and will not hesitate to sanction any officer whose conduct is contrary to its ideals.

He said, “The Service wishes to inform the public that the officer in question has since been subjected to internal processes and placed under suspension following the allegation of his involvement in the case in May, 2024.

“The Service, therefore, fully supports the court proceedings aimed at determining the level of his culpability.

“Nigeria Immigration Service awaits the court judgement before making further comments on this to avoid subjudice.

“The Service reaffirms its commitment to excellent service delivery, discipline, and zero tolerance for criminality and will not hesitate to sanction any officer whose conduct is contrary to these ideals”.

NDLEA Issues Strong Warning Over Illicit Drug Trafficking

Meanwhile, the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rtd. Brigadier General Buba Marwa, has issued a stern warning to the youth population against the consumption and trafficking of illicit drugs.

Naija News reports that Marwa delivered this cautionary message during the inauguration ceremony of the agency’s newly established Zonal Office in Ayingba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi, on Tuesday.

Represented by the Zonal Commander Zone C, Hassan Sakaba, Marwa emphasized that the establishment of the Zonal Office in Ayingba was a strategic move to bolster the agency’s efforts in combating the widespread drug abuses and trafficking activities across Kogi and other regions of the North Central.

He implored the residents of Kogi to unite with the NDLEA in its crusade against the illicit drug trade, emphasizing the importance of this collective effort in protecting the youth from the detrimental effects of drug abuse.
