The Senator representing Imo East Senatorial District, Francis Ezenwa, on Tuesday,  dumped the Labour Party for the All Progressives Congress.

The defection was announced by the Senate Majority Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, during the plenary on Tuesday.

In his defection letter, Onyewuchi cited the crisis within the Labour Party as the reason for his resignation.

He also stated that his decision was made in accordance with the nation’s Constitution.

He said, “This decision is due to the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored the earlier election into the Nigerian Senate.

“The communication is, therefore, made pursuant to Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.

“Imo State and the entirety of the South-East remain united under the leadership of our performing governor, his excellency, Hope Uzodimma.”

After the letter was read, Ezenwa was warmly welcomed by APC lawmakers and was escorted to his new seat in the APC section of the Senate chambers.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Senate suspended its rules to admit the Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma into the chamber in accordance with Senate rules.

Uzodimma, the Chairman of the APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, and his team were present to witness Ezenwa’s defection.
