An irate mob in Misau, the headquarters of Misau Local Government Area in Bauchi State, yesterday overpowered the police and carried out jungle justice on two suspected armed robbers accused of killing a commercial motorcycle operator and stealing his motorcycle.

The incident was confirmed by the State Police Command.

DAILY POST gathered that the suspects were lynched in connection with the brutal killing of a 25-year-old motorcycle operator, Muhammad Mamuda Baba Jibir, popularly known as ‘Achaba,’ from Sabon Layi in Misau town.

The spokesman of the Command, SP Ahmed Wakili, in a phone interview with DAILY POST, stated that the Command got wind of the incident on August 18, 2024, when the police in Misau received a report from a good samaritan who saw a body lying in a pool of blood in Anguwan Agwaluma on the outskirts of Misau town.

SP Wakili added that upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Misau Police Division led a team of detectives to the scene, where they discovered that the victim’s throat had been slit with a knife.

The detectives later deposited the corpse at the General Hospital in Misau, where a medical doctor confirmed the victim’s death.

However, the suspects, who met their waterloo yesterday, were arrested by the police with the stolen motorcycle along the Misau-Kari road.

They were reportedly arrested by the police before being mobbed by the irate crowd, who burned them to ashes.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed, frowned upon the actions of the irate youths who, instead of allowing the suspects to be taken into police custody for proper investigations, mobbed the suspects who had already been arrested by the police.

According to him, “They (the mob) overpowered the police, took the suspects from police custody, and killed them. This was barbaric and inimical to the laws governing our dear country.”

The Commissioner of Police warned the residents of the state that the Command, under his stewardship, will not tolerate or allow any individuals to continue taking the law into their own hands by killing suspects who have been duly and promptly arrested by the police in such a dehumanizing and unlawful manner.

He warned that nobody has any right to treat a suspect in such a barbaric manner, adding that it is wrong for anyone to assume the role of law enforcement agencies.
