The Delta State Police Command has denied allegations that officers attached to Dragon 15 shot a young man in the Morsogar area of the state on Tuesday.
This comes after a video alleging that a police officer shot a young man in Delta State for refusing to give them money circulated on social media on Wednesday.
In a statement on X.com on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, dismissed the video as fake news, saying that “if the policemen had done anything wrong, by now they’ll be behind bars. We don’t shield bad eggs.”
Edafe wrote, “Say no to fake news! In response to the fake video that went viral yesterday, policemen attached to Dragon 15 shot a boy in Morsogar on Tuesday.
“Well, after trying my best to explain that he was not shot, the CP directed that the team look for the boy to come and tell the world by himself if indeed he was shot or not.
“I hope and pray bloggers kindly post this as they did with the fake video that went viral.”
Speaking with Edafe in the video, the young man recounted the incident.
He said, “The policeman just pushed me and I fainted. So I was taken to the hospital afterwards. The police did not shoot me.”
Edafe urged citizens to trust the police, cooperate with their officers, and allow them to do their jobs.
“Nigerians should learn to verify facts. It’s not everything you see on social media that you just believe. Verify facts, analyse videos, and make findings before you start concluding,” he added.
