Jigawa moves to avert cholera outbreak

The Jigawa State Government has strengthened its disease surveillance mechanisms and public enlightenment efforts to prevent the spread of diseases in the state.

Abdullahi Kainuwa, the state Commissioner for Health, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the state government’s efforts to prevent disease outbreaks.

This follows reports of a cholera outbreak in several states of Nigeria, including neighboring Kano State.

Kainuwa explained that cholera outbreaks have been a recurring issue in Jigawa State, especially during the early rainy season.

He stated, “Due to concerted efforts by the state government, National Primary Healthcare, and donor partners, the occurrence and impact of the disease have been effectively controlled over the past two years, with no reported cases of cholera in the state currently.”

“We have activated disease surveillance mechanisms across 287 political wards in the 27 local government areas of the state to prevent any potential outbreaks.”

“We have also launched public campaigns to raise awareness and promote proactive measures within communities, focusing on personal and environmental hygiene, and avoiding the consumption of unsafe water.”

The commissioner also urged communities to promptly report any malfunctioning public water facilities to the nearest officials for immediate repairs, ensuring access to clean water throughout the communities.

He noted nthat there have been no reports of cholera outbreaks in the state, and the government is taking all necessary measures to prevent any potential outbreaks.
