The Joint National Transport Safety Committee of Nigeria (JNTSCN) has appointed Mr. Nweke Martin Uzoma as the Anambra State chairman and South-East Regional Coordinator.

The announcement was made by Mr. Taiwo Oluwadamilare Mogbojuri, the National Executive Chairman of the Committee, during the South Regional Strategic Meeting and Inauguration Ceremony held in Delta State.

Mr. Mogbojuri, in his inaugural speech, highlighted the pivotal role of the JNTSCN in enhancing road safety compliance across Nigeria. He expressed gratitude for the support of various regional officers and state chairmen who have been instrumental in advancing the committee’s objectives.

“The inauguration ceremony marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to promote road safety and reduce road traffic accidents in Nigeria,” stated Mr. Mogbojuri. “The Joint National Transport Safety Committee remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, and other Governmental MDAs to implement effective transport safety policies and initiatives.”

The JNTSCN, a National Tripartite Committee comprising relevant government’s Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), is tasked with reducing and finding solutions to truck crashes in Nigeria. The committee was established in accordance with the ECOWAS Road Safety Policy, Charter, Action Plan, and Monitoring & Evaluation Framework, approved at the 60th Summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government on December 12, 2021.

Mr. Mogbojuri confirmed the appointment of Mr. Uzoma, who brings three decades of experience in shipping transport, export, and general logistics services. “We believe his experience will help promote the objectives of the National Committee and Joint Taskforce in Anambra State and the Southeast region at large,” Mogbojuri stated. “Mr. Nweke Martin Uzoma is entrusted with coordinating and administering Transport Safety compliance in the Southeast Region. His role is pivotal in ensuring that we achieve our goal of reducing road accidents and enhancing the safety of all road users. We have full confidence in his capabilities and dedication to this cause.”

During his address, Mr. Mogbojuri highlighted the urgent need to address the rising incidents of truck accidents in Nigeria, referencing the tragic events of the first quarter of 2024, which saw multiple fatalities. He stressed the importance of spreading advocacy for truck drivers’ Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) training and minimum safety compliance across all regions of Nigeria.

The JNTSCN is embarking on a robust advocacy and sensitisation campaign throughout the Southern States of Nigeria.
