Abia Warriors chairman John Obuh has expressed high hopes for the club’s future as he anticipates that more of their players will receive call-ups to the Nigeria national team.
This optimism follows the recent invitation extended to Abia Warriors’ talented midfielder, Innocent Godwin, who has been selected to join the senior national team ahead of the crucial African Nations Championship qualifiers against their arch-rivals, Ghana.
Reflecting on Abia Warriors’ recent performance, Obuh hailed the team for securing a 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. This win marks their first away success of the 2024-2025 Nigeria Premier Football League season and serves as a significant boost for the club, both in morale and standings.
In discussing the match, Obuh commended the club’s technical staff, led by Imama Amapakabo, for successfully transforming the team’s fortunes after a challenging start to the season.
“I must commend the players for their gusty showing in Benin City and the Imama Amapakabo-led technical crew for turning the team’s fortunes around after a poor start to the season,” he remarked.
He added, “Our players have been outstanding of late, and I am pleasantly surprised by Innocent Godwin’s invitation to the Super Eagles. It speaks volumes about the talent in our squad, and I am confident that more players will receive calls to the national team before the season concludes.”
The victory over Bendel Insurance has propelled Abia Warriors into the fifth position in the NPFL standings, and the chairman sees this as a part of a larger positive trajectory for the club.
Their next game is a home match against Heartland in an eagerly anticipated Oriental derby this weekend in Umuahia.
