Jose Mourinho Backs Manchester United’s Decision to Stick with Ruben Amorim Despite Historic Low

Fenerbahce manager José Mourinho has expressed support for Manchester United’s decision to retain head coach Ruben Amorim, despite the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish.

United ended the 2024/2025 season in 15th place, crashing out of contention for European competition next season. Their last hope of salvaging the campaign ended in a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, denying them Champions League qualification.

Despite the mounting pressure and speculation over Amorim’s future—fueled by his own remarks suggesting he might step down—United appear set to continue with the 40-year-old Portuguese tactician into the 2025/2026 season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho said:

“From what I read, the impact [of losing the Europa League final] on Man United, of course, it is huge in the sense of how many years Man Utd is not involved in any European competition. But at the same time, it looks like they are supporting Ruben. They are giving him time and conditions to go forward.”

Mourinho, who guided Manchester United to their last European trophy—the Europa League title in 2017—highlighted the importance of stability and patience in management.

Amorim joined United from Sporting Lisbon last year with high expectations but has faced criticism after a turbulent debut campaign. Still, the club’s leadership appears committed to backing him through a rebuilding phase.
