The army chief of Bangladesh, Waker-Uz-Zaman, on Monday, said he will form an interim government following the resignation of Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Naija News gathered that Hasina had fled the capital in the face of overwhelming protests.

The protest in the country has seen more people killed in one of the worst violence since the birth of the South Asian nation more than five decades ago.

According to BBC, Hasina is heading for Tripura, the capital of Agartala in India.

However, there was no official confirmation about Hasina quitting and leaving Dhaka.

Hasina, 76, and her sister earlier took a military plane to India’s eastern state of West Bengal, according to media reports,

The PM was said to have been forced to quit after massive protests against her government over a controversial quota system that reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971.

The Army Chief, Waker while speaking in a broadcast to the nation on the state television said, “We will form an interim government.”
