Former Juventus defender, Leonardo Bonucci has expressed his wish that his former club succeeded in signing Riccardo Calafiori this summer.

Premier League side, Arsenal, are on the verge of completing the signing of Riccardo Calafiori from Italian Serie A side, Bologna.

Calafiori, who is just 22-year-old, has made himself one of the most sought-after centre-backs in the world thanks to his performance at Bologna.

Since he joined the Italian side from FC Basel on August 31, 2023, for a transfer fee worth just €4 million, Calafiori has made 33 appearances for the club in which he scored two goals and provided five assists.

This unprecedented form earned him a place in Italy’s national team during Euro 2024 in which he played three times and provided an assist.

Riccardo Calafiori’s form has forced top European clubs like Juventus, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and a host of others to queue for his signature.

As it stands, the Gunners have won the battle to acquire his signature as the Premier League side and Bologna have agreed on a deal worth €50 million for the defender.

While reacting to Riccardo Calafiori’s potential move to Arsenal, Bonucci noted that the 22-year-old Italy international is a unique defender.

“I’m sorry about his transfer. I would have liked to see him at Juventus,” he said.

“He’s a defender who’s a little different to what we’re used to seeing…”
