Kano CJ Orders Release Of 37 Prison Inmates

The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, issued an order on Monday to release 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre.

The decision to release the inmates was part of ongoing initiatives aimed at alleviating overcrowding in the state’s correctional institutions.

The Chief Justice’s declaration was primarily influenced by two significant considerations: their declining health conditions and their extended periods of detention without trial.

Reports indicated that many of the released inmates were experiencing serious health problems that had deteriorated during their incarceration.

Justice Abdu-Aboki underscored that the absence of sufficient medical care within the facility had further jeopardized their health.

“By releasing these individuals, they can seek proper medical attention outside the confines of the custodial facility,” the Chief Judge stated.

Naija News understands that several inmates had been detained for an extended duration without trial, raising significant concerns regarding potential infringements on their rights.

The lengthy periods of detention without formal legal proceedings played a crucial role in their release, as this practice is inconsistent with established judicial norms.

In a meeting with the released inmates, Justice Abdu-Aboki encouraged them to uphold good conduct and refrain from behaviours that might lead to reoffending.

To assist with their reintegration into society, each inmate received ₦10,000 for transportation purposes.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ado Inuwa, praised the Chief Judge’s initiative, highlighting that it not only addresses the issue of overcrowding but also demonstrates a compassionate approach to the health and rights of inmates.

He appreciated the Chief Judge’s dedication to enhancing conditions within Nigeria’s correctional system and ensuring equitable justice.
